Seamlessly Extending a Characterful Oak Barn Conversion

In 2019, Mr. and Mrs. Belgrave set out to enhance their West Chiltington, West Sussex home with a thoughtfully designed green oak extension.
Having lovingly restored their oak barn conversion, they wanted a new garden room sitting area that would blend harmoniously with the existing structure.

Their vision was to create a space that felt like a natural extension of their home—offering a tranquil retreat to enjoy the surrounding landscape while maintaining the character and charm of the original barn.

Designing a Light-Filled and Functional Space

The design team worked closely with the Hopkins to bring their vision to life. An oak-framed structure was chosen for its timeless appeal and natural warmth, ensuring the new orangery blended beautifully with the existing architecture.

The layout was carefully planned to maximize space, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere that connected seamlessly to the rest of the home.
Large windows and doors were incorporated to flood the room with natural light, enhancing the sense of openness. The flat roof design maintained a sleek, modern aesthetic while ensuring the space remained well-insulated and comfortable year-round.

Designing a Timeless Extension

The design team worked closely with the Belgraves to ensure the extension complemented their existing home.

A green oak frame was chosen for its rustic beauty and ability to age gracefully alongside the original barn. Careful attention was given to the proportions and detailing, ensuring the extension felt seamlessly integrated rather than an afterthought.

Large windows and glazed doors were incorporated to bring in natural light and offer uninterrupted views of the garden, enhancing the sense of connection to the outdoors. The structure was designed to retain the charm of traditional oak framing while incorporating modern comforts for everyday living.

Transforming Everyday Living: The New Garden Room

The construction phase focused on precision craftsmanship, with seasoned green oak carefully selected to match the existing barn conversion. Traditional mortise and tenon joinery techniques were used to maintain authenticity and structural integrity.

The extension’s roof and timber detailing were crafted to mirror the original barn’s aesthetic, ensuring a cohesive look.
The installation of energy-efficient glazing provided insulation without compromising on style, creating a warm and inviting space throughout the year. The meticulous attention to detail ensured that every element of the new garden room echoed the charm and character of the Belgraves’ home.
