A Year-Round Garden Retreat

In 2015, Mr. and Mrs. Kosher sought to enhance their home in West Meon, Hampshire, by adding a beautifully crafted oak-framed mansard orangery. Their vision was to create a comfortable and elegant sitting room that could be used throughout the year, allowing them to fully appreciate their garden in all seasons.

The project required careful planning to ensure the new structure seamlessly complemented their existing home while maximising natural light and warmth.

The orientation of the orangery was carefully considered to optimise garden views, with expansive windows and glazed doors providing a seamless connection to the outdoor space.

Designing the Perfect Orangery

The design process focused on blending traditional oak craftsmanship with the practical needs of modern living. A mansard-style roof was chosen to give the orangery a distinctive character, while the oak frame provided a timeless aesthetic that harmonised with the existing property.

Large glazed sections were incorporated into the design to allow ample natural light to flood the space, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.

Insulation and energy-efficient glazing were integrated to ensure year-round comfort, maintaining warmth in the winter while preventing excessive heat in the summer. The result was a thoughtfully designed space that enhanced both the functionality and beauty of the home.

Meticulous Authenticity

The construction phase required meticulous attention to detail to ensure the new structure blended harmoniously with the existing home. High-quality green oak was selected for its durability and natural aging properties, allowing it to develop a beautiful patina over time.

Traditional joinery techniques, including mortise and tenon joints, were used to maintain authenticity and structural integrity.

The mansard roof, a key feature of the orangery, was carefully constructed to provide both visual appeal and practical benefits. The design allowed for increased ceiling height, enhancing the sense of space while ensuring the structure remained in proportion with the main house.

The addition of a high-performance roof lantern further increased natural light, contributing to the warm and inviting atmosphere of the sitting room.

A Seamless Blend of Comfort and Nature

Upon completion, the mansard orangery became a cherished space within the Kosher home, providing a tranquil retreat that could be enjoyed throughout the year.

The thoughtful combination of oak framing, extensive glazing, and expert craftsmanship resulted in a structure that not only enhanced the property’s aesthetic appeal but also significantly improved the homeowners' quality of life.

Whether relaxing with a book on a sunny afternoon or entertaining guests on a winter evening, the orangery provides the perfect balance of comfort and connection to the outdoors. This project showcases the versatility and enduring beauty of oak-framed extensions.

Mr. and Mrs. Kosher now have a stunning orangery that not only complements their home but also serves as a timeless sanctuary for years to come.
