Oak Car Barn with Accommodation in South Downs

Project details

South Downs, Hampshire
2015

A Functional and Scenic Workspace

In 2015, Mr. and Mrs. Lambert sought to enhance their property in the South Downs by constructing a multi-purpose oak-framed car barn. Their vision extended beyond simple vehicle storage—they also needed a dedicated office space to accommodate their growing business while also incorporating practical storage and utility features.

The design included a spacious upstairs office with a fully glazed gable end, providing uninterrupted views of the stunning South Downs landscape. The ground floor also featured a shed, a toilet, and space to park three cars, ensuring a balance of work and convenience.

The design incorporated traditional joinery techniques, ensuring authenticity while allowing for modern comforts.

Designing a Multi-Use Oak-Framed Barn

The challenge was to create a structure that seamlessly blended functionality with aesthetics. The oak frame, with its durability and timeless appeal, complements the charming rural setting of the South Downs.

A key feature of the project was the fully glazed gable end, which not only flooded the office with natural light but also provided breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

The upstairs office was designed to be both spacious and inspiring, creating a comfortable and productive work environment. Meanwhile, the ground floor layout was carefully planned to accommodate vehicle storage, a shed for additional storage needs, and a convenient toilet to serve both work and leisure functions.

Precision and Integrity

The construction phase required expert craftsmanship to achieve both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. The oak frame was carefully crafted using traditional mortise and tenon joints, ensuring long-term durability.
The pitched roof and exposed beams reinforce the barn’s classic character while integrating seamlessly with the existing property.

Special attention was given to the glazing of the gable end, as it was a defining element of the design. The large glass panel had to be expertly installed to maximise the views without compromising insulation or structural stability. The finished result was a light-filled office space that provided the perfect setting for productivity and creativity.

On the ground floor, the three-car parking area was designed for easy access and practical use. The inclusion of a toilet and a storage shed ensured that the space was not only functional for business operations but also a practical addition to the overall property.

The Perfect Blend of Function and Form

The completion of the oak car barn with office space provided Mr. and Mrs. Lambert with a highly functional yet visually stunning addition to their home.

The blend of traditional materials with modern design elements resulted in a workspace that was both inspiring and practical.

This project showcases how thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship can create a structure that serves multiple purposes while complementing its natural surroundings. The Lamberts now enjoy a bespoke workspace that not only meets their business needs but also enhances their daily living experience.

Testimonials

What our clients are saying

“James and the team did an excellent job constructing my 3 bay Oak Garage. James was always on time, arriving on site early every morning. James is very experienced in working with Oak and made me feel reassured from the onset that my project was in good hands. James offered me different options at the planning stage so I was able to choose my own roof tiles, garage doors etc, which I particularly valued. Most importantly James did not go over budget and the cost of the garage was exactly as quoted. I would not hesitate to recommend The Green Oak Building Company.”
