Transforming a Bungalow into a Stylish Home

In 2015, Mr. and Mrs. Edge aimed to transform their bungalow in Bookham, Surrey, by creating a more spacious and aesthetically pleasing living environment. Their vision involved removing the existing roof and installing a striking oak frame that would add height and character to their home.

They also wanted to enhance the entrance with a beautifully crafted oak porch. Below is an outline of the design, construction process, and successful completion of this project, which significantly improved the functionality and visual appeal of the bungalow.

The design phase was crucial in ensuring that the new oak-framed extension would complement the existing bungalow while providing the desired increase in space and light.

Designing the Oak Frame

The Edge family wanted an open and airy feel, so the decision was made to remove the existing roof structure. This allowed for the installation of a robust oak frame that would support a new, higher roof, creating a dramatic sense of volume within the living space.

To ensure that the extension harmonised with the existing design of the bungalow, careful consideration was given to the style and proportions of the oak frame. Large windows were incorporated into the design to maximise natural light and offer views of the surrounding garden.

The use of natural materials was essential to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the oak frame added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the home.

Skillful Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail

The construction process involved significant structural modifications, including the careful removal of the existing roof. This stage required close attention to ensure the integrity of the remaining structure was maintained.

Skilled craftsmen were brought in to construct the oak frame, using traditional joinery techniques to ensure durability and authenticity. Once the oak frame was in place, the new roof was built over it, seamlessly integrating the extension with the original bungalow.

This careful approach allowed for the creation of a bright and spacious interior that felt both modern and connected to the home’s original charm. The addition of the oak porch at the front further enhanced the property’s appeal, providing a welcoming entrance that complemented the overall design.

A Stylish and Functional Transformation

The completion of the oak-framed extension in 2015 transformed the Edge family’s bungalow into a stylish and functional home.

The new space provided them with an enhanced living area that was bright, airy, and full of character. The vaulted ceilings and large windows created an inviting environment perfect for family gatherings and entertaining.

By successfully merging modern design with traditional craftsmanship, the project has allowed Mr. and Mrs. Edge to enjoy a beautifully expanded home that reflects their style and meets their needs, along with an oak porch that adds to the overall charm of their property.
