Blending Leisure with Traditional Charm

In 2015, Mr. and Mrs. Addams sought to create a dedicated pool room at their property in Durley, Hampshire. The oak-framed building was to serve as a recreational space adjacent to their outdoor swimming pool.

They envisioned a space, however, that would be more than just a functional space next to their swimming pool—it needed to feel like an extension of their home, with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional country pub.

To achieve this, we designed an oak-framed structure that combined rustic elegance with modern practicality. The inclusion of a mansard roof played a crucial role in navigating the challenges of the challenging planning application, while also adding character to the final design.

Thoughtful Design: A Mansard Roof with Rustic Elegance

Given the constraints of the planning process, the mansard roof was a key design choice. This distinctive roofline not only softened the building’s profile within the landscape but also ensured it complied with height restrictions while maximizing interior space.

Inside, the goal was to capture the charm and warmth of a traditional country pub. The exposed oak beams created a rich, textured aesthetic, while carefully selected lighting and natural materials reinforced the cosy and welcoming atmosphere.

Large glazed openings were incorporated to allow natural light to flood the space and allow for the enjoyment of the poolside views, creating an environment perfect for relaxation and social gatherings.

Expert Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail

The construction of the oak-framed pool room required a high level of craftsmanship to ensure both structural integrity and visual appeal. The oak frame was handcrafted using traditional mortise and tenon joints, providing not only durability but also a timeless aesthetic that would age beautifully over time.

Internally, a combination of natural stone flooring, timber cladding, and a carefully curated selection of fixtures helped to bring the country pub feel to life.

Bespoke joinery details, such as exposed trusses and hand-finished timber, further enhanced the authenticity of the space. The integration of modern glazing within the oak frame allowed for a bright and airy interior without compromising on the traditional feel.

A Unique Space for Relaxation and Entertainment

Upon completion, the oak-framed pool room exceeded Mr. and Mrs. Addams’ expectations. It became a space that seamlessly blended function with leisure—a place where they could unwind after a swim, entertain friends, or simply enjoy the warmth and character of the handcrafted oak structure.

The project successfully balanced traditional craftsmanship with the practical needs of a pool room, ensuring it felt like a natural extension of their home rather than a separate, modern addition. By incorporating elements inspired by a classic country pub, we created a one-of-a-kind retreat that offers year-round enjoyment.

As this case study shows, thoughtful design and expert construction can turn a straightforward pool enclosure into a distinctive and inviting space, proving that functionality and character can go hand in hand.
