Project Overview: A Vision for Functional Elegance
In 2017, Mr. and Mrs. Saunders embarked on an ambitious project in the picturesque Meon Valley, Hampshire, to create a multifunctional space that would cater to their equestrian needs while enhancing the aesthetics of their home.
The couple envisioned a large stable block to house their horses, a dedicated hay barn, and a double car garage. They also wished to create a covered way leading to the back door of their house, ensuring convenient access.
A significant transformation also included the removal of the front of the house to incorporate a stunning glazed oak screen with a built-in porch. This case study delves into the design and construction process that brought their vision to life.
Designing the Stable and Car Barn
The design phase of the project focused on creating structures that would blend seamlessly with the natural beauty of the Meon Valley. The stable block was designed to accommodate multiple horses, with ample space for each animal, ensuring their comfort and wellbeing.
Featuring traditional materials and architectural elements, the stable incorporated large, airy stalls, ventilation systems, and natural lighting to create a welcoming environment for the horses. The hay barn was strategically positioned nearby for easy access, providing a practical solution for storing hay and feed. The double car garage was designed not only for functionality but also to complement the overall aesthetic of the property.
A covered way was added, linking the garage to the back door of the house, providing shelter and convenience, particularly in inclement weather.
Transforming the Entrance with a Glazed Oak Screen
One of the most striking elements of the project was the removal of the original front of the house to create a large glazed oak screen.
This decision was made to enhance the natural light within the home and provide a visual connection to the stunning outdoor landscape. The glazed oak screen featured large, floor-to-ceiling windows that offered panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, while also serving as a focal point of the entrance.
The built-in porch provided a charming and functional entryway, offering shelter from the elements while adding character to the home. The combination of oak framing and glazing harmonised beautifully with the surrounding environment, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
This transformation not only improved the home’s curb appeal but also created a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
A Successful Blend of Functionality and Aesthetics
The completion of the stable barn, car barn, and entrance porch in 2017 marked a significant achievement for Mr. and Mrs. Saunders. The entire layout was planned to ensure efficient movement between the stable, hay barn, and home, catering to the daily routines of the Saunders family.
The project successfully addressed their needs for a functional equestrian space and space for cars, while enhancing the overall aesthetic of their home. The design seamlessly integrated with the natural beauty of the Meon Valley, providing a tranquil retreat for both horses and humans alike.
